Some things just seem crazy!
Recently, I attended a friend’s graduation ceremony. It was your typical, long and slow ceremonial scene. Except that when the announcer got closer to calling my friend’s name, I noticed that the girl in front of her was on her cell phone. There were thousands of people in attendance, all focused on the next few to cross the stage, and this girl was actually still talking on her phone. As “Phone Girl’s” name was called, she literally tilted her head to the side to hold the phone with her shoulder, shook the announcers hand, and reached for her diploma with her free hand. I was amazed. Some of the audience began making rude remarks and only a few people clapped for her.
My friend later explained to me that the girl on the phone was talking to her mother whose last wish was to see her daughter graduate. Because the mother needed respirator support to breathe, it was impossible for the mother to attend. So the daughter decided to bring her mother with her by phone.
I’ll bet that if the crowd knew the Mother’s situation, everyone would have stood and cheered as “Phone Girl” and her mother crossed the stage. The next time someone does something that SEEMS ridiculous, remember that you do not know what’s going on behind the scene. Simply smile and accept that person’s actions as significant because in this universe, everything is.
